Retaining walls solve real problems and add real value. Whether you need to control erosion, level a sloped yard, manage drainage, or create usable terraced space, a properly built retaining wall is the answer. At ProBuild Construction, we design and build retaining walls for homeowners across Plano, Allen, Frisco, Prosper, and Celina using materials and engineering suited to North Texas soil conditions.
Our region’s expansive clay soil makes retaining wall construction uniquely challenging. Walls that aren’t designed for soil movement will lean, crack, and fail within a few years. Every wall we build includes proper drainage, compaction, and reinforcement to handle the ground movement that comes with DFW’s clay soil and weather cycles.
Segmental Block Walls (Interlocking): The most popular choice for residential retaining walls. Manufactured concrete blocks that interlock without mortar. Available in dozens of colors, textures, and sizes from brands like Belgard, Pavestone, and Versa-Lok. Cost-effective, attractive, and engineered for structural performance.
Natural Stone Walls: Texas limestone, fieldstone, and flagstone walls that blend naturally with the landscape. Each stone is hand-selected and placed for a unique, organic appearance. Premium option for homeowners who want the look of natural rock.
Poured Concrete Walls: Maximum strength for tall walls and heavy structural loads. Formed, poured, and reinforced with rebar for applications where block or stone won’t provide enough support. Can be finished with stone veneer, stucco, or decorative concrete.
Boulder Walls: Large natural boulders stacked and arranged for a rugged, natural aesthetic. Ideal for rustic landscapes and gentle grade changes. Each boulder weighs hundreds of pounds and requires equipment to place.
Timber Walls: Pressure-treated landscape timbers for smaller walls and garden borders. Affordable option for grade changes under 3 feet. Not recommended for tall walls or structural applications in North Texas clay soil.
Erosion Control: If water runoff is washing away soil from your yard, a retaining wall stops the erosion and redirects water properly. Critical in North Texas where heavy spring and fall rains can move significant amounts of soil.
Sloped Yard Leveling: Many properties in Plano, Frisco, and Allen have sloped yards that limit usable outdoor space. A retaining wall creates flat, level areas for patios, outdoor kitchens, play areas, and landscaping.
Drainage Solutions: Retaining walls combined with proper drainage systems (French drains, channel drains) solve standing water problems that damage foundations, drown plants, and create mosquito breeding areas.
Foundation Protection: Soil that slopes toward your home directs water to your foundation. A retaining wall with drainage redirects water away from your house, protecting your most valuable investment.
Landscape Terracing: Create multi-level garden beds, seating areas, and visual interest in your yard. Terraced retaining walls turn a plain slope into a beautiful, functional landscape.
Every retaining wall ProBuild constructs follows engineering best practices for North Texas conditions:
Excavation & Base: We excavate below grade and install a compacted crushed limestone base. The first course of block or stone sits below ground level for stability. Base depth depends on wall height and soil conditions.
Drainage: A perforated drain pipe behind the wall with clean gravel backfill allows water to escape rather than build up pressure behind the wall. Hydrostatic pressure from trapped water is the number one cause of retaining wall failure.
Geogrid Reinforcement: For walls over 3 feet tall, we install geogrid fabric layers that extend back into the soil behind the wall. Geogrid anchors the wall to the earth and allows it to resist the lateral pressure of the soil. Required by engineering standards for taller walls.
Compaction: Every 6-8 inches of backfill is mechanically compacted to prevent settling. Proper compaction is the difference between a wall that lasts 30 years and one that leans within 3.
Setback & Batter: Each course of block steps back slightly (called setback or batter) so the wall leans into the hillside. This counteracts the outward push of the soil and adds structural stability.
Free Site Assessment: We visit your property in Plano, Allen, Frisco, Prosper, or Celina. We evaluate the grade change, soil conditions, drainage patterns, and any existing structures. We measure everything and take photos for design.
Design & Engineering: For walls over 4 feet, we provide engineered drawings. For all walls, you receive a detailed design with material selection, dimensions, drainage plan, and a clear price quote.
Permitting: Retaining walls over 4 feet tall require a building permit and engineering in most DFW cities. We handle the entire permit process including engineering stamps when required.
Construction: Excavation, base preparation, drainage installation, wall construction, backfill, and compaction. Most residential retaining walls take 3-7 days depending on length and height.
Final Grading & Cleanup: We grade the soil above and below the wall for proper drainage, install any requested landscaping, and leave your property clean.
How much does a retaining wall cost in Plano, TX?
Retaining wall costs depend on material, height, length, and site conditions. Segmental block walls typically run $25-$50 per square face foot installed. A 30-foot long, 3-foot tall wall (90 sq ft) costs approximately $2,250-$4,500. Natural stone walls cost more. Walls requiring engineering add $1,000-$2,000 for plans. We provide exact quotes after a free site assessment.
How tall can a retaining wall be?
Single walls can be built up to 6 feet or more with proper engineering and geogrid reinforcement. For grade changes over 6 feet, we often recommend terraced walls (two or more shorter walls with a flat area between them) for both structural and aesthetic reasons. There is no practical height limit when properly engineered.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall?
In most DFW cities including Plano, Frisco, and Allen, retaining walls over 4 feet tall (measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall) require a building permit and engineered drawings. Shorter walls generally do not require permits but must still meet setback requirements. We check your city’s specific requirements.
How long does a retaining wall last?
A properly built retaining wall with correct drainage and engineering lasts 50 years or more. Segmental block carries manufacturer warranties of 25+ years. The key factors are proper base preparation, drainage behind the wall, and compaction of backfill, which is why professional installation matters.
Can a retaining wall fix my drainage problem?
Yes. Retaining walls combined with French drains, channel drains, and proper grading are one of the most effective drainage solutions for residential properties. We assess your entire drainage situation and design a wall system that solves the problem permanently.
