Plastic edging lifts out of the ground within a year. A stone border does not. It holds the mulch in, keeps the mower off the plants, and gives the front of the house a clean line that reads from the street.
We build raised and flush beds in cut limestone, natural stone, block and steel edging, sized to the planting and sloped so water drains out instead of standing at the roots. Decorative rock, mulch and soil are installed as part of the job, not left for you to handle.

A flush border is enough when you only want a clean line and a mow strip. A single course of stone gives you three or four inches to hold mulch. Two or three courses turn the bed into a raised planter, which drains better and puts the plants at a height where they read from the street. Deeper is not automatically better — a raised bed against the house has to be detailed so it moves water away rather than trapping it.
We finish beds with soil, mulch or decorative rock as part of the job. Mulch feeds the soil and holds moisture but breaks down and needs topping every year or two. Rock never needs replacing but gets hot, and weeds still find their way into it without fabric underneath. Most front yards we build use rock at the foundation line and mulch out in the planting beds.

Steel gives a thin, modern line and disappears visually, which works well against artificial turf. Stone gives height and mass and lets you raise the bed. We install both and the right answer depends on whether you want the border to be seen or not.
It can if it traps water against the house, which is why we slope beds away from the foundation and keep soil below the brick line. Beds built up against the siding are one of the more common drainage mistakes we get called out to fix.
River rock and decomposed granite both hold up well. White marble chip looks sharp against turf but shows dirt faster. We bring samples so you can see them in your own light before you commit.
